Selected Muslim-Friendly Updates

Japan is basically tolerant of different religions and recently has made more efforts to cater to the needs of Muslim travelers. In addition to this, Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Kuala Lumpur Office highlights several Muslim-friendly travel topics that are relevant to inspire Malaysians intending to travel to Japan.

The Muslim Friendly Project in Gifu Prefecture

Hida Takayama

With a population of about 80,000, Takayama City attracted over 35,000 travelers from Malaysia and Indonesia and is making an effort to provide Muslim travelers with comfortable trips, clearer information about Muslim-Friendly restaurants, and prayer space availability through their Muslim-Friendly Project and travel guide. A popular destination in this area is the picturesque town of Hida Furukawa which inspired the setting for hit animated movie "Your Name" or "Kimi no Na Wa", alongside easy access to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-Go.

Provided by Kanazawa City

Takayama itself attracts many history and nature buffs with its various preserved buildings and bustling morning market. It is also the western gateway to the famously car-free hikers' paradise, Kamikochi.

Experience Halal Beef in Hyogo Prefecture

Halal Kobe Beef

Home to the oldest existing mosque in Japan, the Kobe city is just 20 minutes by train from Osaka. Kobe Mosque (Kobe Muslim Masjid) was built in 1935, and survived air raids in 1945 as well as a large earthquake in 1995. The city is also popular during cherry blossom season, with Ikuta River Park and Sumaura Park attracting local and international visitors alike.

Kobe offers various Muslim-Friendly facilities, alongside authentic teppanyaki dining experiences with halal-certified meat. So, Muslim diners can indulge in this cuisine without worry.

More Prefectures are Improving Their Muslim-Friendly Websites and Guides For Tourists Effort

Shizuoka Prefecture

Shizuoka Prefecture is known for their top quality tea, beautiful hot springs, and is home to the iconic Mount Fuji.  In improving efforts to put Muslim travelers at ease, they have updated their portal that shares information about Muslim-Friendly restaurants, grocery stores, and other relevant facilities.

Toyama Prefecture

Toyama Prefecture has become popular due to the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train). Muslim travelers may refer to the updated Toyama Muslim Guide website for helpful travel information when planning a trip to the region.

Okayama Prefecture

Okayama City, located in Okayama Prefecture, has been ramping up their efforts to provide Muslim-Friendly travel experiences for the past few years, with Japan's first halal-certified bakery opening in this city in 2016.

The Peach Mark is the Muslim-Friendly symbol used in Okayama City, Maniwa City and Kibichuo Town to provide information on products and services that refrain from using pork by-products and alcohol, along with features that are helpful for non-Japanese, such as English ingredient lists, English menus and English language services. The standards for businesses to be certified with the Peach Mark were developed in cooperation with Japan-based Muslims and organizations.
