Autumn Foliage Spots in Japan
Away from Crowds

 

Dear JNTO fans,

 

Soon it will be the end of September and Japan will be welcoming autumn in near future!

 

Speaking of autumn, the first thing that comes in mind is definitely the beautiful maple leaves.

 

So today, we would like to introduce some lesser known autumn foliage spots in Japan for you which allow you to enjoy this seasonal scenery without crushing with the major crowds! Follow us!

Ikaho Onsen (Gunma prefecture)
Further your step from Tokyo into Gunma prefecture for a special autumn foliage viewing spot away from crowds, Ikaho Onsen. 
 
Ikaho Onsen, a historical hillside onsen town centered around 365 stone steps. After a short walk from the top of the stone steps, you will reach Kajika Bridge, the hidden foliage viewing spot here. 
 
You are also suggested to visit this spot at night for the magical atmosphere created by the illumination light up!
 
The leaves start to turn red around 20th October every year and reach the peak on early November.
 
After having a soothing bath at Ikaho Onsen, take a slow walk to Kajika Bridge for the night time foliage scenery. How relaxing!
Natadera Temple (Ishikawa prefecture)
We all know Kanazawa city in Ishikawa prefecture, but how many of you know that there is also a place in Ishikawa prefecture which is rated 1-star in Michelin Green Guide Japan in 2015?
 
Natadera Temple, a temple built into natural caves continues to express the harmony between nature and human life. Under the combination of mossy forests, traditional Japanese style gardens and carp-filled ponds, Natadera Temple allows visitors to experience the sense of wabi-sabi here.
 
Come enjoy the scenery that changes in different angle of view here during autumn! White cliffs and caves decorated with red maple leaves just make Natadera Temple one of the famous foliage viewing spots in Hokuriku area of Japan.

Adachi Museum of Art (Shimane prefecture)

Adachi Museum of Art, located in Yasugi city, is only an hour self-driving distance from Izumo city, Shimane. You can find not only famous modern Japanese painting and ceramic arts here, but also Japanese style garden which has been ranked as the top one Japanese Garden in Japan for 18 consecutive years.

 

Adachi Museum of Art is also the only site which has been awarded 3-star in Michelin Green Guide Japan in San'in area!

 

The gardens in Adachi Museum of Art are said to be "living Japanese painting" for the perfect balance of traditional Japanese garden with the natural mountains at the back.

You can see different seasonal faces in the gardens and every angle you see just forms the perfect Japanese painting in your eyes!

 

During autumn, with the fiery red mountains in the back, these gardens show another of their charming points to their visitors. The gardens are decorated with red and orange colors which will bring you into a total different world comparing to the gardens during summer.
