JAPAN UPDATE FROM JNTO KUALA LUMPUR

October Vol. 1 (2021-13)
Japan is closer to you than you think!

How many of these famous Japan icons have you seen before?

While we may not be able to meet just yet, we here at JNTO Kuala Lumpur

want you to know that Japan is always "nearby".

And while we're at it, of course we'd like to keep you pumped up to come to Japan when the borders reopen!
In this issue, we're bringing to you 3 museums of famous Japan icons
that you probably have seen yourself here in Malaysia!

So, how about it? Next time you come across some of these names
at your local kedai runcit or supermarket,
why not plan to go visit their homes in Japan next?

🐱 Japan’s largest Maneki-Neko Museum 🐱
Seto City, Aichi Prefecture

Have you ever entered
a shop, only to be
immediately mesmerized
by the slow, hypnotic,
waving paw of the
Maneki-neko resting on
the front counter?
Maneki means “to invite”, and Neko means “cat”, and it is one of Japan’s most recognizable symbols. True to its namesake, it is a lucky charm, a “cat” that “invites” wealth, prosperity, or good luck for you depending on which paw it has raised.

Even in Malaysia, you are bound to have seen this feline seated high on the shelves of shops, beckoning at you pleasantly. And at the Maneki-Neko Museum in Seto City, Aichi; you can find over 5000 of them.

Collected from all over Japan, you can find different types of Maneki-Neko here in various colours and poses, all believed to bear their own meanings.
If you are a business owner, one trip here could be just what you need to decide which one is best for your shop!

Of course, there is a souvenir store right next door for you to do just that. What better souvenir from here than a gold cat with the small hammer to help boost your sales, or a black cat with both paws raised that will protect your store back at home dutifully.

You can also experience painting a one-of-a-kind feline guardian for yourself (as pictured below!), at the painting experience section of the museum.

🍺 Japan’s first local beer! Sapporo Beer Museum 🍺
Sapporo city, Hokkaido

See those red star motifs
on this building here?
The yellow version of the iconic North Star here
is the trademark symbol of
Sapporo Beer,
the oldest brand of beer
in Japan.

The origin of the brand name itself came with the opening of its first brewery in Sapporo, as Hokkaido’s ample snow and ice was thought to be needed for the German technique of cold brewing used for their beer production.

A century after its founding, The Sapporo Beer Museum was also opened in Sapporo, in commemoration of its rich history. The first local beer, as well as the first (and only!) local beer specialty museum; with such “first”s under its belt, it is not a far-cry to say that Sapporo Beer is one of Japan’s best-known icons.

Within its beautiful aged red brick walls, the museum offers to its visitors two types of tours: a free tour of all the brand’s historic paraphernalia exhibitions, or a premium tour, where their brand communicators will be on hand to personally guide you. Here’s a special sneak peak: the premium tour concludes with a tasting of an exclusive recreation of one of their founding brews, the Sapporo Beer Kuro Label!

Of course, the premium tour is not the only option for you to experience Sapporo Beer’s fine brews. You can also make your way to the attached Star Hall, a rustic German-style beer hall where you can taste fresh-brewed beer shipped direct from their local breweries nearby for reasonable prices.

They have other food halls too, read more below!
🍜 CUPNOODLES Museum 🍜
Yokohama city, Kanagawa Prefecture

Big bold letters in red and white, sometimes
sandwiched between alternating gold bands.
Did you know that Cup Noodles is the O.G instant ramen in a cup?

The distinct logo design of this household name has scarcely changed since its launch, and honestly? It doesn't need to. While already a timeless brand, Nissin's Cup Noodles's popularity is ever growing.

(In fact, they only just greeted their 50th anniversary last September! Hooray!)

Not your typical museum, the CUPNOODLES Museum here in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai District is a mish-mesh of fun exhibits suitable for everyone. Read on for some excerpts of this fantastic venue's many facilities as featured on JNTO's Experiences in Japan website!:

At the My CUPNOODLES Factory, design packaging and fill your cup with you favourite soup and toppings to make your very own original CUPNOODLES.

Design enthusiasts are sure to appreciate the museum's sleek interior and the retro-style fittings of a faithful recreation of Momofuku's Work Shed, where Chicken Ramen was invented. At the Instant Noodles History Cube, marvel at the history of instant ramen and its spread across the world as expressed through 3000 product packages spanning the last half-century.

No visit is complete without a trip to the museum's Noodles BazaarーWorld Noodles Road, where guests can choose from a collection of international noodle dishes to be enjoyed in a setting that recreates the ambiance of an Asian night market.
